Professional qualifications of a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist
Marriage and family therapy is a distinct professional discipline with training available in discipline-specific graduate programs (Master's or doctoral level) in marriage and family therapy or through postgraduate course programs in marriage and family therapy for (Master's or doctoral level) graduates in other mental health disciplines. In addition to their rigorous course work qualifications, members of the Canadian Registry of Marriage and Family Therapists have achieved clinical membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the international credentialing organization.
All qualified Registered Marriage and Family Therapists have completed at least two years of professional work experience after completion of their graduate degree, and at least 1000 hours of direct service under the supervision of an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, a professional specifically trained in the supervision of marriage and family therapy. As part of their commitment to professional excellence, RMFTs agree to be governed by a rigorous code of ethics; this code has the highest ethical standards in the marriage and family therapy profession.
Clinical members welcome inquiries about their training, experience, theoretical orientation, length of treatment, goals and fees.
